Death Certificates issued in California must be Apostille in California. To get an Apostille for Death Certificate in California you must make sure you have the correct Death Certificate that will be acceptable for Apostille. It is recommended that the Death Certificate that you will need Apostilled is issued after 2000.
For all City and State issued documents bearing the seal of the city or the State and the signature and name of the deputy signing the document, Notarization is NOT required.
There are 3 kinds of California Death Certificates:
Death Certificate issued by the Sate of California. These are usually signed by and Medical Doctor and/or State Registrar of Vital Records. These documents are eligible for apostille without additional Authentication by other agencies.
Death Certificates issued by the County. These are usually singed by the County Registrar Recorder and are eligible for Apostille without additional Authentication by other agencies.
Death Certificates issued by the Department of Health Services. These are usually signed by Medical Doctor Health Office. these Death Certificates will require the Authentication or Examplification of that County's registrar office to be eligible for Apostille.
